Will definitely look into it. I hadn't tried boost.python! 
My other plan was to just save everything to file then use matplotlib, but would much prefer to use the convenience of something like gnuplot if it works out. I've tried the python fftw library extensively and it's fantastic, just experimenting mainly to see if c will give me any speed benefits, and also just out of curiosity:-D thanks for spending the time going through it.
